School Floors
By Barbara Pheloung

The much anticipated follow-on book in the Move to Learn series, School Floors, provides a brief overview of the history of Move to Learn and gives information about things that can be done after the movement program as well as advice about how to get the program into schools.

There are chapters on diet, nutrition, food additives, allergies, sound therapy, auditory processing, the effect of retained primitive reflexes, playground management and improving social interaction of LD kids.

Particularly helpful are a quick functional vision screening test, a 'ready for school?' test and a 'what to look for before the third birthday' chapter.

There are exciting contributions by many leading educators, therapists and specialists in the field of learning difficulties including:

Veronica Steer, Dr Marilyn Dyson, Chris Chapparo, Margaret Greville, Pye Twaddell, Sue Larter, Sue Dengate, Jacqueline Lee, Sue Mackay, Julia Dive, Sue Mackay, Michelle Learmouth, Rachel Fisher, Winsome Richards, Mike Almond & Carol Hewatt. There are chapters explaining the importance of diet and dealing with sound therapy and auditory processing, as well as a section dealing with the effect of retained primitive reflexes & allergies on learning by Occupational Therapist, Veronica Steer and Dr Marilyn Dyson.

Dr. Soezin Krog, Senior Lecturer, University of South Africa (Unisa) "The program provides teachers with invaluable skills on how movement enables neurological development and with the right kind of movement, children are able to achieve learning readiness and learn better. Move to Learn also emphasises the importance of movement in the educational programme.”

Help Your Child to Learn
By Barbara Pheloung

Read a detailed review of this book in UNCENSORED online magazine.

Sometimes there are apparently unexplainable blocks to learning which prevent intelligent children from reaching their potential. The blockages can be so difficult to pinpoint that no-one is aware of the real problem. Consequently, the frustrated or withdrawn behaviour, which results is often blamed as the problem itself. This hidden handicap and where we can go for help forms the basis of this book.

This is a practical guide for parents of children who are experiencing learning difficulties or learning disabilities:

Where and how to find help that suits your child.
Check lists that will help you identify the areas that need further investigation: body movement, speech, allergies, eyes, ears.
Mothers' stories of 9 children.
This book will either reassure you that there is no need to worry or identify the best available help.

Barbara Zaremba, Head, The Guild Centre, Sydney College of Advanced Education

"This book should be in the professional library of all teachers and students as a reference."

Ken Johnson, Principal, Cromehurst Public School, Special Education Centre, NSW

"I will be recommending this book to all teachers and parents who contact us about a learning disability. It contains valuable and reassuring information."

The book is written for those parents and teachers who wish to help their children to open new horizons through ease of academic learning. Help Your Child to Learn has sold over 22,000 copies and is in its third edition.

Help Your Class to Learn
By Barbara Pheloung

In those with learning difficulties or learning disabilities, the foundations for classroom learning have not been properly laid. Barbara Pheloung's Help Your Class to Learn brings together her practical experience in a form which teachers and busy parents will find useful and encouraging. It has a lot of information about setting up a perceptual movement program in a school, including suggestions of equipment , (much of which you could make yourself), & activities.

The book provides theoretical background to support the practical work and information for accessing additional services. With the cooperation of psychologist Robyn Taylor, Barbara also presents research showing the tangible results from her work with this program.

The Hon. Dr Marlene Goldsmith

"For some children the door to learning is locked. It must be opened if they are to achieve their potential and acquire the skills necessary for our complex, high-technology society. But, because the problem has many causes, the challenge is finding the right key. From her many years of expertise and experience, Barbara Pheloung takes a holistic approach to learning difficulties, bringing together many specialist areas, and providing a number of keys. I hope there is one here for every child in need.

Overcoming Learning Difficulties
By Barbara Pheloung and Jill King

Even the intelligent child can have learning problems. Fifteen to twenty percent of school children puzzle their parents. They do not learn as well as expected, and have unexpected behaviour problems. These children are often described this way: "Should do better"; "Can't sit still"; "The class clown"; "Rebellious"; "Not trying"; "Dumb". Parents instinctively know there is a problem, but don't know how to solve it.

This book was written for keen parents and for all professionals who are needed to help the intelligent child who is not coping in the classroom. It will help with diagnosis and presents an extensive program of graded activities which are easy to follow.

Full of practical suggestions and sequences of activities, covering a wide range of areas, it is ideal for planning both therapy and home programme

"This book helps classroom diagnosis of children who are failing to reach their potential and offers practical suggestions to remediate their problems."

Maxine Anderson, Infants and primary school teacher

"There is a great need for this book because parents know when their child is having problems but it is difficult to convince others. Some people thought I was neurotic when I was seeking help for Scott. Because of the help he's received he is now more confident and more competent."

Vicki Morton, Mother of a 7-year-old LD child

"This is an excellent resource book for therapists working with children with learning disorders. It is full of practical suggestions and sequences of activities, covering a wide range of areas. And it is ideal for planning both therapy and home programmes."

Mandy Ryan, Occupational therapist

Jill King, MAPA, has closely studied and practised in the field of children's learning difficulties since 1979 when one of her own children (who is now university trained) was found to have learning difficulties. Jill has worked with LD children in multidisciplinary centres and in schools. As both a paediatric physiotherapist and qualified Feldenkrais practioner, she has acquired a special insight into the LD problem.
